The iPod in schools – Turning Toys into Tools – Teaching with Technology
Wherever you go in the world today, you see people with iPod connected. Have you ever wondered what it hears? Perhaps you suspect they have a crazy music pumping into their brains? And if they are listening to award-winning works of literature? Reading is essential to becoming a more productive citizen.
Students who have difficulty with reading will be difficult in most subject areas at school and in many ways of life. The use of audio books to improve readingfluidity with all readers promotes student success in most areas of life. Intervening early improves student achievement and self-esteem.
Audio books are a great way for teachers to use when trying to educate students of different skill levels and with different learning difficulties, such difficulties, the reluctant readers in the school, bilingual students, special needs of children and children diagnosed with attention deficit disorder orDyslexia.
IPod in the curriculum began in early 2007 with Dekeyser Elementary 25 iPod Shuffle and audiobooks. Children in second and third classes refer to the book and the iPod for use outside of school. Students document if they read the book with audio, or just listen, and they discuss the book with her mother after listening. These books and iPods are in high demand in these two levels. The enthusiasm for reading is immense and parentsand children are pleased to inform the project.
In addition to listening to books that are commonly found in the library, I would like to expand the program to include textbooks of various classes and classes to help students who need to hear is the new text, or have difficulty Read the first hour.
Research (Boston Public Schools) has shown that audio books are useful to speed up the reading. The data show that audio books can improve reading comprehension by 34% asfills the gap for students trying to read the text above their individual level of reading. Listening to oral reading is also proven to help students acquire new vocabulary, stimulating the development of vocabulary, allowing students the opportunity to hear and see the words several times. Research tells us that effective teaching begins with the mastery of reading modeled. Audio-assisted reading can provide unlimited practice for students during silent reading is proof not only independentgreater mastery of reading. Finally, audiobooks create motivated readers.
There are four ways to increase your iPod in student performance and motivation, independent reading, shared reading or small group, listen to the whole class, and the loan of audio books for home use.
"You have a brand new audio books?" "What is your favorite?" "Have you ever heard of this? It 'a great guy with a lot of reading of words!" These are common questions from seveneight and nine, children involved in our iPod into the curriculum. In addition to improving reading achievement and motivation for reading, eager to see the children begging for iPod and audiobooks from the library to retrieve that makes the program extremely useful.
With the cost of the iPod Shuffle reduced to just 49 dollars, the cost of implementing this program is not extreme. The benefits far outweigh the costs.
Engage students and make them beg to listenthe quality of literature!
